Netflix’s two-season adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez’s groundbreaking Cien Años de Soledad (100 Years of Solitude) is almost impossible to follow, given its plethora of characters and historical trajectory … often overlaid and intertwined.

The story is more palpable — and makes more “sense,” if that can be applied to this bestselling book — only by returning to its original premise: Marrying one’s first cousin or into our immediate family is a recipe for disaster. If not borne with tails, offspring will cause and suffer from craziness throughout the ages.

It’s the best way to understand the mythical town of Macondo.
